During the contemporary age the relations between the Catholic Church and the European States have often been characterised by major tensions, brought about by the ways in which religious and civil institutions faced the processes of modernisation. The historical profile of Spain, Italy and France in the last two centuries has undoubtedly been defined, albeit by means of different paths, by the evolution of religious belonging within socio-political modernity and by the taking shape of a multi-faceted pathway of secularisation.
This is the scenario in which the twenty-one essays in this volume are collocated, the outcome of a European work group made up of Italian, Spanish and French scholars. In this way, the studies were able to make a comparative investigation into the dynamics of interdependence characterising the civil institutions, ecclesial organisations, secularist movements and social associations, both internally and in their relations with the outside. In this research work, accommodating historiographical representations have been overcome in order to reach a greater understanding of the historical reality.
